Power Ballad "Underneath" Review by The Hollywood Reporter

“Underneath”

Putting his most naturalistic voice front and center, someone deserves a gold star for sequencing this slower section of the album, which weaves in almost seamlessly. As for this power ballad, it’s a big song that calls for a big singer and, who knows, maybe we’ll be hearing it sung by a future Idol hopeful.

Brian Mansfield's Review of "Underneath"

Underneath (Tom Shapiro, Catt Gravitt, Josh Crosby, Adam Lambert).

In some ways, this haunting ballad's the most interesting song on the album. First off, Tom Shapiro's better known as a country songwriter, with cuts on the new albums from Casey James and Carrie Underwood. And, with its promises of secret confidences and unrevealed truths, it offers a near-irresistible lure, especially to those who feel that, as an artist, Adam gets, at best, misunderstood and, more likely, maligned. "Everybody wants to talk about a freak/Nobody wants to dig that deep/Let me take you underneath," he sings, beginning a journey that ends with "Welcome to my world of truth/I don't want to hide any part of me from you."

Billboard Magazine's Review of Adam Lambert's "Underneath" Song

Underneath - A revealing, piano-driven ballad that ramps up into 'epic' mode as time elapses. Sadly, this would have packed more of a wallop if it had been uniformly bare throughout, as in its first minute.

Adam Lambert has done it again! Another fun and entertaining album from start to finish. I'll admit when I first played this album I thought "Trespassing" was lacking energy and emotion. But with repeated listenings, I began to enjoy and immerse myself in the crazy, eccentric world of Glambert! First off, Adam's voice is still out-of-this-world! And I like that he co-wrote 12 out of the 15 tracks and I would definitely buy the deluxe edition, the 3 bonus tracks are amazing!! The first half of "Trespassing" is funky and carefree and the second half is more introspective. My favorite tracks include: "Underneath", "Outlaws of Love", "Kickin' In" (love the beat), "Never Close Our Eyes", "Nirvana" (gives me chills), "Broken English", "Runnin'" (the best song), and the title-track. You can tell Adam had a lot of fun making this album. This is the perfect summer record and it helps that Adam looks hot on the cover! Buy it today people!

"Underneath" is the stand-out track"

"Underneath" is a beautiful song, sung exquisitely, with great beauty of tone and emotion--and power. Adam has a great, great voice and this song displays it in its fullness. There are no bad songs on the album. And there are lots of good beats. "Kickin' In" is the ultimate club song, essentially a remix of itself. "Outlaws of Love" is the other ballad on the album, also beautiful. I personally like "Broken English," and "Trespassing" is another fun club song. Again, no bad songs, but the album is very different from his first, which was very eclectic. The interesting thing to me is what a fine songwriter Adam is, compared to other current pop artists, not to mention other American Idol recording artists. That's not what I would have expected, based on his run on American Idol, and his being known essentially as a spectacular vocalist and performer. Good for him. He pretty much puts the other American Idol contestants to shame, even Carrie Underwood, who has had some fine releases (and I am not a fan of country music, but credit where it's due). Still, "Underneath" is worthy of Whitney Houston/Mariah Carey classic status. Times have changed, but the song is impressive.
