REVIEWED ITEM: For Your Entertainment (Album)

Adam Lambert's debut was highly anticipated, far more than Kris Allen's, the winner of American Idol. Fans were curious to see where he would take his music, since it seemed he had artistic control over the project. What Adam gives the masses is truly strong album of pop that also delves a bit into arena rock, theater, and adult contemporary, all crafted into a cohesive artistic statement, even without a general theme.
The album couldn't have begun better than with Music Again, bursting with energy and popping with joy. The rest of the album suffers slightly because of it, as there is no equivalent later in the track listing. However, the rest of the songs show such range that it's difficult to criticize. The five ballads on the album are spaced well, with mid- to up-tempos weaved amongst them, though never too jarring. Adam's voice is the greatest instrument on the album, be it when he wails on the chorus of the stomping Strut, restrains his vocals on affected Whataya Want From Me, or becomes a desolate portrait on the eery Broken Open. He owns each note making it count, and if he doesn't seem quite emotionally invested enough, he has plenty of time for that in the years to come.
The album at its core is very much pop. The older crowd that may have liked him on American Idol won't find a lot to enjoy because of it, but it seems clear that this is the type of artist Adam wanted to become. The more rock-influenced songs, such as the aforementioned Music Again, the anthemic Sure Fire Winners, and the Linda Perry co-penned Pick U Up. It all adds to the final product, which is Adam as the glamorized pop rock god that he was always destined to be.
For Your Entertainment is a very strong record. A good six of seven singles could have been promoted from the project, and yet the general public was left with three, only one of which (the gorgeous Whataya Want From Me) painted the album favorably. It is quite the listening experience; no matter what genre Adam takes on, it all feels like he's bringing his best.

Track-by-Track Review
REVIEWED ITEM: For Your Entertainment (Album)

I've learned never to judge an Idol contestant on their first album. Each time, it's primarily a producer's effort, filled with songs plucked from the vaults to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. If they're lucky, the artist will get to nudge parts of the album in an interesting direction or two. I adored Adam Lambert on the Idol stage, but what about as a recording artist?
1. Music Again - Kicking the album off in the best way possible, this Justin Hawkins-penned track is a template Lambert would be wise to follow in the future. He promised us that glam rock is back. This song delivers fully on that promise, with a sugary hook and one hell of a vocal performance. 10/10
2. For Your Entertainment - The first single, and not entirely representative of the album as a whole. This sounds very much like a male version of Britney Spears (a male version who can, y'know, sing). It ditches guitars in favor of a straightforward electro stomp. I wasn't completely sold at first, but this is a grower. 9/10
3. Whataya Want From Me - In some ways, this could be considered the most middle-of-the-road, radio-friendly song on the album. Luckily, Lambert's vocals imbue it with enough character to keep it from sounding too anonymous. This would be a wise crossover choice for radio. 10/10
4. Strut - The beat is nice, as are the guitars. The lyrics (often the weakest facet of the album) are the real letdown here. They're just pretty lame, honestly. The chorus has an interesting shout-along melody that displays Lambert's range pretty stunningly, and the song sounds better the louder you play it. 8/10
5. Soaked - A Muse castoff, this ballad was totally underwhelming in demo form, but Adam manages to transform it into something quite dramatic. His vocals get the full workout here, and they're as impressive as they always were. It opens with a dramatic orchestral flourish and never really lets up. The only downside is that it still sounds very much like a Muse song, rather than an Adam song. 9/10
6. Sure Fire Winners - One of my least-favorite uptempos on the album, this seems to nod to the double-punch of Queen's We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions, but something about it doesn't quite gel. It has the glammy punch I like, but isn't nearly as strong as the first track. Still, at least it's identifiably Adam. And the guitar riff towards the end is really nice. 7/10
7. A Loaded Smile - The song that always seems to fade into the background. It's more of a placeholder than anything. It's a pretty placeholder, for sure, and very atmospheric, but needs a stronger melody to be truly effective. It's nice to hear the falsetto, though. 8/10
8. If I Had You - A high octane dance track, this sounds like something that would be popular in Sweden (think BWO, Ola Svensson, etc). And, surprise, it was written by the always-reliable Swedes. Great beat, great lyrics and fantastic delivery. This gets the album back on track with a jolt. 10/10
9. Pick U Up - The second highlight after Music Again, this uptempo (co-written by Weezer's Rivers Cuomo (!)) has a melody that builds and builds until it absolutely explodes at the end. It's a fantastic, gripping production that utilizes Lambert's ridiculous vocals to full-effect. Even the annoying laugh at the end doesn't derail this stunner (friendly note to Adam Lambert: don't ever laugh on a song again. Doesn't work unless you're Janet Jackson) 10/10
10. Fever - Continuing the strong streak, I loved this song as a Lady Gaga demo and I'm happy that they've changed it up for this album. Instead of the classic-rock styling of the Gaga version, the song's been transformed into a Scissor Sisters vs. George Michael electro number, and it works well. Lambert sounds like he's having a lot of fun with this one. The feeling's contagious. 10/10
11. Sleepwalker - You can spot a Ryan Tedder song miles away, and that's really the only thing that holds this one back. Kicking off the string of ballads at the end of the album, this is a strong one, with a big, multitracked chorus. Lambert sounds a lot like Darren Hayes on the ballads. That's a good thing, by the way. 9/10
12. Aftermath - The cheesiest sounding ballad on the album, this sounds very much like a song you'd expect to hear from an Idol contestant and seems the furthest from the sound Adam is aiming for. Still, for this kind of a track, it's above average. 8/10
13. Broken Open - A beautiful way to end the album (before the bonus track), this atmospheric electro-ballad displays Lambert's falsetto at its Mad World best. It's a very promising musical statement that bodes well for his longevity. 10/10
14. Time For Miracles - I won't score, since this is basically a bonus track, but I've gotta say I still really like it. I'm a sucker for these big disaster movie ballads.

"Emotional, Strengthening, Sexy, and IN-FREAKING-CREDIBLE"

I absolutely love this album. Adam portrays emotions so well with his voice, and I love it.
Music Again- Completely perfect description of love. If you've been hurt before (and who hasn't?) and you have FINALLY found the person who mended you, this song will describe it in perfect detail. Plus, it's really catchy, and the switching audio at the beginning is really cool.
For Your Entertainment- ULTIMATE sexy song. This is the kind of song that makes you want to go crazy on your lover and just plain ravish them. Or take a cold shower. Or both.
Whataya Want From Me- Great for when you're feeling down and just want to scream from the rofftops that YOU CAN'T TAKE THIS S*** ANYMORE!
Strut- Sexy and fabulous. You can strut like a model to this. Or not.
Soaked- Soft and emotionally raw. His voice is absolutely gorgeous in this.
Sure Fire Winners- This is an ANTHEM. For you underdogs out there, if you have a bad day, PLAY THIS. It'll make you feel like the f***ing king or queen of the world.
A Loaded Smile- This song is nice for when you're relaxing or trying to be calm. His vocals are smoothe and the beat slow and low key.
If I Had You- Oh, the irony. Adam portrays the utter joy a person would feel if the person they loved were to love them back, with a fun, funky vibe. Ironic because he has a sexy Finnish boyfriend.
Pick U Up- This song is, ultimately, a pick me up. The fun beat and catchy lyrics will get stuck in your head and drive you a little bit crazy, but you won't care when you're bopping along to this! Super fun to sing in the car, just DO NOT HEADBANG. You may hit some innocent bystander and that would not be good.
Fever- So HOT. Just saying. The live performance of this song includes Adommy kisses and adlibbing. But it's worth it.
Sleepwalker- Soft, slow beats and strong but delicate vocals make up this incredible number, with a funky but sad vibe perfect for days when you don't want to get out of bed.
Aftermath- Cheesy, but a great song to help you feel better when you feel hopeless. I sing this often.
Broken Open- Quiet and lovely. This is the song to sing to someone who has suffered trauma or has lost someone. If YOU lost someone or suffered trauma, listen to this OVER AND OVER. You won't regret it.
Time For Miracles- Great ending to a great album, this song sums up how no matter what happens, you will always have a silver lining.
If you can, also find his songs Master Plan and Down The Rabbit Hole. Both are awesome and it sucks that they're not on the album.

A Very Promising Start

I love most of the songs on this album, lead single and all, but the ones I enjoy the most are the ones he sounds the most natural on, such as Music Again and Time for Miracles. His voice on those tracks sound like how he did on American Idol, sweet and slightly rock. A Loaded Smile is a sweet song but too slow for me to enjoy. The only real flaw I noticed was with Soaked. Soaked is a beautiful and well written song, but Adam's version unfortunately sounds too much like Matthew Bellamy's demo version. Anyway, I hope to hear more rock infused tracks on Adam's third album. :)

"Absolutely Outstanding"

There is not a bad song on this album, and the "worst" song is very, very good. There's a number of people here who review For Your Entertainment very accurately, song by song, in all its excellence so I won't do it again. What I WILL suggest, though, is that you listen to the album several times with a set of good earphones. There is a lot.... and I mean A LOT going on in all his songs, both musically and vocally. It is incredible how deep they are. This is one of the things that has FYE standing head and shoulders above Kris and Allison's album entries. The full richness of these songs can only be truly appreciated with the old 'phones on, so get to it.... you won't be sorry!!!
This album has gone gold, and as the homophobic continue to "get over it" regarding "the kiss," methinks it will ultimately go platinum... as it should.
Refreshing, lightly "Techno," bouncy and very well-made, Adam's "For Your Entertainment" is a first inning, first pitch home run. I can't wait for more!

"Pleasantly Thrilled"

I enjoyed Lambert on A.I., but you never know how these musicians are going to do when they strike out on their own. I'm so happy to say, his music is right up my alley. I love Lady Gaga, Pink and others in the similar vein and even though this is Adam's debut he can run with big acts. The sound is rich and not over processed. His voice is fantastic and did not loose any of it's amazing qualities. There is a good variety of fast dance and reflective ballads on this CD. I recommend this album highly.

"Adam is all over the spectrum, and he makes (almost) all of it sound great"

Adam Lambert has accomplished something quite remarkable with For Your Entertainment. What other so called entertainers might have done with some of this material wouldn't be nearly as depth conscious. Lets start with:
Whataya Want From Me. Here we have a pop hit of epic possibility. The goal must have been to create a song with an impossibly addicting guitar riff hook and superbly simple drum beat. Like a song from Vertical Horizon, it expolodes into action at all the right points and sends Adam on one of the best excitement driven rants and showcases his fun loving side of the music.
If I Had You has supreme appeal as well, like a big, fat, gooey jelly donut after a hard day of work. He works it well, clearly trying to carve out his own niche, combining euro pop with what might be heard if you pieced together what was left on the cutting room floor of a studio session with Rush, which doesn't work to as much effect on the slightly less enjoyable Pick You Up, Strut and For Your Entertainment. With these, he leaves much of the energetic power behind, yet the songs still are a stellar reach above the creative stylings of artists not half as talented.
Sleepwalker can only be described as the song that Richard Marx would do if he had the range and the guts to try. The surprising guitar solo is something out of a hair metal ditty and surprisingly, it is so well placed and well done, that it almost elevates the song to a 5 star rating.
Broken Open is a stellar showcase for Adam's softer side and you can hear the theatrical influence in his intonation quite heavily throughout. Like a Tears For Fears ballad with the rounded edged voiced Curt Smith on vocals, Broken Open is a pure treat of love's power of dessication.
Aftermath has all the tenacity of a modern vocal depth charge and is easily more powerful than anything than Robert Plant could ever hope to conjure up. Absolutely stellar, if you're looking for power songs, look no further than Aftermath.
Time For Miracles, diarrea inducing power ballad schmaltz-fest or no, this stereotypical movie soundtrack destroyer is somehow rendered as less than forgotten movie finale cast crawl musical fodder due in large part to Adam's ability to create a nicely constructed vocal delivery, even on a song more limiting than a continuous loop of Staind choruses.
As for the rest of the album, all other songs fall short in one way or another, or feel unfinished, as though Adam and the producers were simultaneously throwing darts at every musical dartboard, hoping for a bulls-eye. Still, the songs I reviewed here warrant a high score of 4.25 stars. What Adam does with essentially half an album, most other artists can't even hope to touch on 3 FULL albums.
And it's too bad that Adam's version of No Boundaries wasn't included on the album, because not only is it one of the best written rock anthems of the past 3 decades, Adam's delivery is tear inducing. His range on the entire song, ending with stylings equivalent of a son conceived by Steve Perry and Lita Ford,is impeccably perfect.
To sum it up, Adam may not be introducing a whole new style of rock, but he sure is supremely elevating all that every genre of true rock music is supposed to be. And that, if nothing else, makes him every inch, a true American Idol.

Time For Miracles, diarrea inducing power ballad schmaltz-fest or no, this stereotypical movie soundtrack destroyer is somehow rendered as less than forgotten movie finale cast crawl musical fodder due in large part to Adam's ability to create a nicely constructed vocal delivery, even on a song more limiting than a continuous loop of Staind choruses.
As for the rest of the album, all other songs fall short in one way or another, or feel unfinished, as though Adam and the producers were simultaneously throwing darts at every musical dartboard, hoping for a bulls-eye. Still, the songs I reviewed here warrant a high score of 4.25 stars. What Adam does with essentially half an album, most other artists can't even hope to touch on 3 FULL albums.
And it's too bad that Adam's version of No Boundaries wasn't included on the album, because not only is it one of the best written rock anthems of the past 3 decades, Adam's delivery is tear inducing. His range on the entire song, ending with stylings equivalent of a son conceived by Steve Perry and Lita Ford,is impeccably perfect.
To sum it up, Adam may not be introducing a whole new style of rock, but he sure is supremely elevating all that every genre of true rock music is supposed to be. And that, if nothing else, makes him every inch, a true American Idol.

"Better than I anticipated"

Lambert seems to be throwback to the "bigger than life" rock popularized by Bowie and Freddie Mercury and he pulls off this sound with sophistication and aplomb. Showing a very good range, Lambert hits both the rockers and ballads with a nice balance of hubris and control. The first three cuts hit hard, with up tempo beats and a surprisingly plaintive vocal on "Whattaya Want From Me" gives the listener a good indication of what Lambert can do. "Strut" then takes things into more stylized mode and Lambert shows a bit of the over the top quality so necessary to pull off this style of song. Throughout the CD he surprises with a variety of styles and contributors like Rivers Cuomo and Pink keep things interesting. He still needs to find his own true voice, many things owe a bit too much to those who came before, ("Soaked" definitely seems to channel Mercury a bit too closely and a few others smack of pastiche rather than homage.) but overall this is an impressive debut.

What a fabulous first CD/DVD this is. Well worth every penny paid for it... and more! What a voice, what a range! This young man is destined to become a GREAT star with all the glitter and glam anybody could desire. Every song is a winner and the DVD is a joy. It plays on ANY player, totally universal and gives an insight into the making of music videos and photo shoots. Also provides with two full music videos (For Your Entertainment and What Do You Want From Me). All Adam, he does the talking and gives a running commentary on what is going on as he is having his make up applied. You see the videos being made and the you enjoy the finished thing. This young man is going nowhere but 'up' can't wait for his second CD.

"Well written songs performed with Adam's signature stamp"

I'm a hard rocker myself, but Adam's amazing vocals during idol caused me to open up and take a good listen. The influences on the new release are obvious and diverse (from Mercury and Bowie to Aretha and even Cher). The production is good (I would like it heavier, but, hey, it's not my record). But Adam's willingness to sing the songs his way and push the envelope of taste, decency and acceptance, not just visually but lyrically too, make me want to stand and cheer for more.
I hear negative statements about how he "screeches." I can't help but remember my mother saying the same thing about Janis Joplin and Robert Plant back in the day. Did she (does he) screech? If that's the word you want to use, fine, but it's a joyful noise!

Adam Lambert is definitely a favorite of mine. This cd is as good as it gets, with a mixture of different songs and beats that are really a joy to listen to. I have listened to this cd over and over again and never tire of the music. This has to be cranked up high to fully appreciate it! Adam has quite the range and he really mixes up his songs so that no two songs are alike. A must buy!

I love this album for many reasons. Adam is over the top with catchy tunes and beautiful ballads. He doesn't put himself in any "box," and that is evident in this CD. He has an amazing voice, and personality to boot. I love his edgy, "in your face," style and will continue to be a die hard fan.
This album proves that Adam is on his way to true stardom and I couldn't be more thrilled for him.

It is pretty unheard of to find a CD that touches on every one of my favorite music styles... funk, pop, electro, rock... Heck, its unheard of to find an ARTIST that can do that. But Adam can, and that is why I love this CD. You may not like every single song, and that is ok. There is literally, something for everyone on this record, and it is worth every penny.
Get it... you wont be sorry!

"Time for an objective review"

Let's start with the fact that I was an Adam fan when he was on AI. However, I'm a country music fan, so Adam's music is not what I would normally listen to, but I do ocassionally make an exception.
When I listened to the 30 second clips, I was in great fear that I was not going to like this CD very much. But, I've changed my mind after listening to it in full, twice now.
Music Again gets a "9" from me. I think this song is a love it or hate it song. I happen to love it. It has a real British sound to it and I am definitely reminded of Freddie Mercury when listening.
For Your Entertainment is a decent song. I gave it an 8, but it is not close to being the best song on this CD.
Whataya Want From Me? I'm not quite certain, but Pink's influence stands out in the first of the 10 star songs on this CD.
Strut: I can't stand it. I'm not big on songs with hard beats, and this one in particular did not sit well with me. I'm sure others will enjoy it, but not my cup of tea. I'll give it a 3 for the heck of it.
Soaked gets a 7 rating as a somewhat decent ballad.
Sure Fire Winners is a song many are going to love. Unfortunately, I don't as it sounds rather ordinary to me. Still not a bad song, just not a great one. But we can't expect every song to be great, can we?
A Loaded Smile: I loved the song except for the fact that it gets somewhat lost at the three quarter mark before rapping up the way it began. Still 8 stars despite the 3/4 quirk.
If I Had You: As I stated before, I don't really care for songs with strong beats, but this one is a real exception. Another 10 star.
Pick U Up: Not bad; it gets progressively stronger as it moves along. Rating; 7
Fever: Another song with a strong beat, but not so impressive. Again, if you like a strong beat you'll enjoy it. For me, I could tolerate it; 5 stars.
Sleepwalker: 6 stars, just an average semi-ballad.
Aftermath: Okay, this song sent me for a loop. I swear I thought I was listening to Chris Sligh when he was with Half Past Forever. And that, for me, is not a bad thing. This is my favorite song on the CD. Rating 10
Broken Open: Nice ballad perfectly placed on the CD. I only gave it a 7 rating because the techno background sound really bothered me. It just doensn't go well with this ballad.
And Finally, Time for Miracles. This is just another great song, plain and simple. Rating 10
Overall, I'm impressed. The only negative I can see is that Adam doesn't really give us an idea where he is heading musically as the CD has a little of everything. That isn't necessarily bad though.
Even though I wasn't ecstatic with every song, there are quite a few really super songs that I think this is a very good, maybe great, CD. Most will enjoy.
